Over 11 lessons we take a trip through the cosmos and explore galaxies! We explain the fascinating science behind gravitationally bound systems of stars, dust, gas, and dark matter. Learn about the different types and shapes of galaxies, including that of our very own Milky Way. Then, go on to explore the mysterious black holes that lie at the heart of large galaxies and the superclusters of galaxies that congregate throughout the universe.

Lesson 0 - Lesson Planner

A run down to all the lessons in this course.

Lesson 1 - Introduction to Galaxies

This lesson is an introduction into galaxies, from how they were initially observed on Earth, to the different forms they take, to the position of our Milky Way galaxy.

Lesson 2 - The Classification of Spiral Galaxies

This lesson describes the structure and types of spiral galaxies and delving into the Hubble Classification.

Lesson 3 - The Structure of Spiral Galaxies

This lesson is about the components of spiral galaxies and how these features differ from galaxy to galaxy. Also we investigate the two main theories as to how spiral galaxies form.

Lesson 4 - The Basics of Elliptical Galaxies

This lesson introduces elliptical galaxies. From their shapes and age, their physical nature, to the black holes lurking at their centres.

Lesson 5 - The Basics of Irregular Galaxies

This lesson is about the shapes, features and interactions of the third category - irregular galaxies. This includes the colliding and merging of galaxies.

Lesson 6 - The Milky Way Galaxy

This lesson is about our home galaxy the Milky Way, which contains much more than just our Solar System. We describe the shape, origins and qualities of this special galaxy.

Lesson 7 - Nebulae & Supernova

This lesson explains the stages and composition of interstellar clouds of gas and dust, known as nebulae and the explosive deaths of stars known as supernova.

Lesson 8 - Active Galaxies (Quasars)

This lesson is about the luminous and highly energetic active galaxies. We explore the two types of active galaxies with active galactic nuclei.

Lesson 9 - Active Galaxies (Black Holes)

This lesson discusses the mysterious science of galactic black holes, including different types and the powerful quasars that light up the centre of galaxies.

Lesson 10 - The Local Group & Superclusters

This lesson explores our galactic neighbourhood known as The Local Group and looks into other clusters and superclusters of galaxies, understanding the largest structures in the Universe.

Lesson 11 - Dark Matter & Dark Energy

This lesson is about the mysterious dark matter that cannot be seen with telescopes - the building blocks of galaxy formation and dark energy permeates all of space, expanding all of space.
